European Environment Agency (EEA)
The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an EU agency with the task to provide sound, independent information on the environment. Sweden has been a member of the EEA since 1994 and is represented in the EEA management board by the Swedish EPA.
Support for environmental knowledge in Europe
The EEA aims to achieve significant and measurable improvement in Europe's environment, by providing timely, targeted, relevant, and reliable information to policymakers and the public. The EEA has 32 member countries and six cooperating countries.
The EEA’s mandate is:
- To help the EU community as well as member and cooperating countries make informed decisions about improving the environment, integrating environmental considerations into economic policies, and moving towards sustainability
- To coordinate the European environment information and observation network.
The European environment information and observation network, Eionet
The European environment information and observation network, Eionet, is a partnership network of the EEA and its member and cooperating countries. Through Eionet, the EEA brings together environmental information from individual countries concentrating on the delivery of timely, nationally validated, high-quality data.
In Sweden 12 authorities and about 50 experts are involved in the cooperation within Eionet. These authorities are also often closely involved in tracking the progress of reaching the environmental goals.
The Swedish cooperation with EEA and Eionet is coordinated by the Swedish EPA as national focal point for EEA in Sweden.

EEA-Eionet Strategy
The EEA-Eionet Strategy for 2021-2030 gives the direction for EEA and Eionet in the coming decade. The joint task of EEA and Eionet is to give EU policymakers and the public the best available knowledge to reach the targets on environment and sustainability.

Europe's environment
Europe's environment 2025 draws on the latest scientific evidence and is underpinned by the most comprehensive data on environment, climate and sustainability available in Europe – both temporally and spatially.
The report data comes from and is validated by 38 countries (EU and non-EU). More than 600 national partner institutions contribute to the EEA's work that is the basis for the report's robust and reliable data and analysis.
The overall report has three parts:
- Main report: ”Europe's environment and climate: knowledge for resilience, prosperity and sustainability”
- Thematic briefings: comparable overview of past trends, an outlook to 2030, and an assessment of prospects for meeting EU policy targets for 35 topics on environment and climate as well as enablers for a green transformation.
- Country profiles: country level assessments written by the countries themselves on key national trends in environment and climate, socio-economic developments, and changes in relation to energy, mobility and food.
