The Climatools research programme aims to provide decision-makers with a better basis for developing strategies for adapting to climate change.
Society must adapt to climate change, and it is for this reason that the Swedish EPA is funding a multidisciplinary programme on climate research. FOI, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, has been commissioned to direct the five-year Climatools programme in partnership with KTH (the Royal Institute of Technology) and the Universities of Uppsala and Umeå.
Local and regional decision-makers are going to find themselves faced with difficult choices between competing options, such as prioritisations among socially important activities. Authorities will need practical tools for managing the necessary adaptations by society.
The present programme will provide the actors involved with a better basis for developing adaptation strategies. It will study where intervention is appropriate and where it is unnecessary. It will examine the effects of different prioritisations on the national environmental quality objectives. The programme consists of eight projects in the areas of programme synthesis, scenarios, adaptability analysis, public health, economic analysis, conflicts of aims, external analysis, and equal opportunity, plus programme management and communication.
