The activities of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in the interests of sustainable development are based on the sixteen national environmental quality objectives laid down by the Swedish Riksdag. As the central government authority for the environment, the Swedish EPA has the overarching responsibility for work towards the environmental quality objectives.

The Agency also has an important role to play in the transition to a sustainable society. Our concern is to encourage every sector of society to shoulder its environmental responsibilities – globally, nationally and locally.

The Swedish EPA assists sustainable development

We take an active role in climate issues and in developing policy instruments and tools in the interests of promoting sustainable development, and we assist other government agencies with tasks such as setting up environmental management systems.

We also provide funding for the remediation of contaminated sites and develop systems for waste management.
