As a member of the European Union (EU), Sweden’s climate policy is linked to the EU’s climate change objectives and common policies. A range of national measures and instruments are used to meet the objectives set out.

Climate policy in the EU

The member states of the EU have committed to jointly reduce their emissions by eight per cent by 2010 and by at least 20 per cent to 2020.

Sweden's climate policy

Sweden is now increasing the pace of work on the transition to a low-carbon society The aim is to make the country independent of fossil energy, and Sweden therefore has to make its own contribution to international efforts to reduce emissions.

Development cooperation

International climate cooperation and emissions-reducing investments abroad form part of national climate and energy policy. International cooperation is essential in limiting human impact on climate.
